Fracture repair recovery: what to expect

EMReviewed by Eben Martin, Veterinary Surgeon · Updated August 2026

Most surgically repaired fractures heal over 6 to 12 weeks, confirmed by follow up x-rays, with young animals often dramatically faster. The animal typically uses the leg within days of a good repair; the owner's job is confinement discipline while the bone quietly catches up with how good the leg already feels.

StageWhat is happeningWhat you do
Days 1 to 14Wound phaseStrict rest, cone, pain relief; sutures out around two weeks
Weeks 2 to 6Early bone healingConfinement with short leash toileting; no running, jumping or stairs
Weeks 6 to 8Recheck x-raysThe bone tells the surgeon how much freedom comes next
Weeks 8 to 12Progressive loadingStaged return to activity as healing confirms

Casts are the high maintenance option

If your pet is in a cast or splint, you have signed up for vigilance: weekly or fortnightly professional checks, obsessive attention to swelling, smell, chewing and slipping, and total dryness. Cast sores are common, preventable and miserable. A cast that smells, or toes that swell, is a same day appointment.

A repaired leg that was improving and suddenly is not, or any grinding, new instability or reluctance to bear weight, deserves x-rays promptly. Implants can loosen, and early revision is far better than late.

Common questions

When can the implants come out?

Most plates and pins stay for life without trouble. Removal is for irritation, infection or implants placed in growing bones, and only after healing is confirmed. It is a much smaller procedure than the repair.

How do I confine a healing kitten? It is impossible.

A large dog crate or a stripped bathroom, no furniture launch pads, and rationed play in your lap. It feels cruel for three weeks and prevents a lifetime deformity. Young bones heal so fast that the sentence is mercifully short.
